KwaZulu Natal boasts Sodwana Bay, Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks; some of South Africa's premier diving destinations. But KZN also has some of the most progressive and interesting communities that are leading us all into the future. In this section of the African Diver website we showcase people, organisations and places in KwaZulu Natal.

Love Coffee, Love Cappuchino, Love Food, Love The Corner Cafe:

You know you're dipping into something quite different when you're welcomed in for coffee at The Corner Cafe. First off, you can't miss the venue when you're trundling down Brand or Cromwell streets in Glenwood ... there's all this funky grafetti decorating the place, you see. The walls seem alive, it's "a highly stylized graphic mural that combines elements of comic book fantasy and futuristic sci-fi planet loving design" (exact words by Ewoke of Ewokessay).

Then there's the irrepressible Judd Campbell; proprietor, waiter, fitness and cycling fanatic, movie addict who spews movie one-liners ad infinitum. Mad, zany, loveable and absolutely committed to living life fully and sustainably.

What makes The Corner Cafe so special, apart from the amazing coffee, Judd and the staff that just seem to make things happen despite Judd's best efforts, is they live their ethos of living sustainably.

We are an eco-restaurant, we try to conduct business in a manner that least disrupts the environment. Beverages are ordered in glass bottles, no plastic or tin. We do not stock plastic straws and serviettes are linen not paper. All washing and cleaning is done with dolphin friendly detergents. Excess kitchen scraps are fed into our wormery and turned into worm tea which in turns feeds our garden from which we grow our herbs. We do not use microwaves nor chip fryers. We do not use bathroom aerosols but instead use flower essential oils, or i cut up handfulls of lemon grass and leave it on the floor in the toilets and it smell so kiff.

Did I mention the coffee's pretty darn good? Oh, and they also have a bakery but you'd better get there sharpish in the mornings because it's sold on a first-come-first-served basis and pretty much sold out by mid-morning.

So go on down and feel the love, grab a chocolate ciabatta and wash it down with a cappuchino ... and if you're there at lunch time, ask for the fish cakes. I recommend them, anytime, any day.
